Parts of the Monastery and Abbey Church

Using the ground plan for the Beaulieu Abbey, explore the church and cloister of a medieval Monastery and accompanying abbey church.  Beaulieu was a Cistercian foundation, which means that the monks of the monastery followed the Benedictine Rule but in the way of the monastic group called the Cistercians.  (See Cistercians.)   As such, Beaulieu would have housed two types of monks, Lay Monks and Professed Monks.  This was usual for Cistercian monasteries of the later middle ages.   Photographs and images for these pages come from the Detroit Publishing Photochrom collection (see the historyfish photochrom collection), and from English Monastic Life by F.A. Gasquet.
